Gameplay

Santa Monica Studio's God of War Ragnarok continues the gripping saga of Kratos and his son Atreus. Set three years after the events of the 2018 game, the story moves toward the inevitable Ragnarok, the end of days in Norse mythology. The gameplay emphasizes fluid, brutal combat with the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. Weapon switching has been improved, allowing for faster combination attacks.

The game introduces new elemental attacks and a skill tree that expands the variety of offensive and defensive moves. Atreus is more active in combat, and the game occasionally features missions where you play as him directly, using his bow and unique abilities. Exploration focuses to realms such as Svartalfheim, Vanaheim, and Muspelheim, providing a mix of linear levels and semi-open areas.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is grand and emotionally charged. The voice performances, especially those of Kratos and Atreus, deliver some of the most memorable moments in gaming. The graphical fidelity is outstanding, with snow, water, and lighting effects that bring each realm to life. The score uses Nordic instruments to underscore both epic battles and quiet emotional scenes.

Features

Key features include deep weapon upgrade systems, runic attacks, armor sets with unique perks, a codex with lore, collectible artifacts, liberation missions, and boss battles that test your mastery. The game also offers a full photo mode for capturing beautiful scenes across all realms.

God of War Ragnarok was initially a PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 exclusive. In late 2024, a PC version was released on Steam and the Epic Games Store, featuring enhanced graphics, support for widescreen displays, and NVIDIA DLSS compatibility.
